In Finland the number of unemployed job seekers increased considerably in April 2020

According to the Statistics of Finland the number of unemployed job seekers increased considerably in April 2020 compared to the corresponding period last year. So, at the end of April 2020, there were altogether 433 000 persons registered as unemployed job seekers at the employment and economic development offices. This number was 203 000 higher than in April last year.

Unemployment rose in April from the same period of the previous year in the areas of all Centres of Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. Тhe biggest increase was in the following regions:

  • Uusimaa - 115%,
  • Southwest Finland - 106%,
  • South Ostrobothnia - 105%,
  • Ostrobothnia - 100%.

At the end of April, the number of fully laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 164 000, which was 152 000 higher than twelve months earlier. The sharp increase in the number of unemployed jobseekers and the number of full-time lay-offs was due to restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

There was a decrease in number of new vacancies in April 2020. There were reported 50 000 new vacancies to the employment and economic development offices, which is 19 000 fewer than in April last year.

The unemployment rate was 8,1% in April, having been 8,0% in the year before.
