Finnish Tax Card

Essential Updates and Guidance for the 2026 Tax Year

Finnish Tax Card

The tax card sets your income tax rate. If your income or deductions change, request a new card to ensure your tax rate remains correct. Your tax card is available in the MyTax (OmaVero) service at vero.fi. Logging in to MyTax requires strong authentication, such as online banking codes. If you still receive paper mail, the tax card can be delivered to you by post, usually by the end of December.

Tax cards take effect on 1 January, and the income limit applies to the full calendar year (12 months). You can request a revised tax card at any time in MyTax if your income or deductions change.

From 2026, trade union fees are no longer tax-deductible, but unemployment fund fees remain so. These fund fees will be automatically included in your pre-completed tax return, so there is no need to request a revised tax card for this reason alone. Only report these fees if you are already updating your tax card due to other changes.

Please note that starting in 2026, the home office deduction is no longer available for wage earners, even for actual remote work expenses.

Most employers, Kela, and pension providers receive tax cards automatically. However, new pensioners must usually request their first tax card themselves to ensure the income information is updated.

What to Do When You Receive a New Tax Card

  • Estimate your total income for the year. Check the income limit, which is calculated for the entire year (1 January – 31 December) and includes, for example, holiday pay. The Tax Administration estimates this limit based on your previous income (e.g., your tax assessment for 2024 or a revised tax card from 2025).
  • Request a revised card if your estimate changes. If you expect your income to be higher or lower than the amount stated, request a new tax card through MyTax (OmaVero) as soon as it becomes available. Since income may vary, you can re-estimate and adjust your income limit at any time. The card can be updated as often as necessary.
  • Confirm delivery to your employer. Ensure your employer or other payer receives your tax card information directly from the Tax Administration. If they do not receive it automatically, you must deliver it to the payer yourself.
Finnish Tax Card: Key Changes Introduced in 2025

Starting from 2025, tax cards come into effect on 1 January. This means that tax cards now take effect at the beginning of the year, instead of February as in previous years. The income limit is set for the full 12 months rather than 11. This change makes it easier to track your income, as the tax rate covers the entire calendar year, simplifying the monitoring of the income limit.
