Opened and closed companies in Finland 2019

According to the Statistics Finland, 9 879 new companies started their business in the third quarter of 2019 (from July to September) and 5 098 companies closed their business in the second quarter of 2019 (from April to June) for the whole country. The number of new businesses increased by 23 per cent in the third quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year. The number of companies that had been closed was at 6 per cent less than in the corresponding period in 2018.

The number of opened enterprises was highest in Helsinki and composed 1 955 companies in the third quarter of 2019 and along with this the most enterprise closures were registered also in Helsinki municipality – 1 039 in the second quarter of 2019.

The number of enterprise openings and enterprise closures in sub-regional unit of Helsinki was also the largest one and composed 3 880 enterprises and 1 876 companies, respectively. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of opened companies grew by around 840 compared to the same period last year.

The second municipality with the highest enterprise openings and enterprise closures was Espoo, where were registered 664 new companies and 290 closed companies.

In other municipalities the number of enterprise openings were the following (3rd quarter 2019):

  • Vantaa - 537
  • Tampere - 481
  • Turku - 397
  • Oulu - 352

In other municipalities the number of enterprise closures were the following (2nd quarter 2019):

  • Tampere - 219
  • Vantaa - 193
  • Turku- 176

There were also 757 opened companies in the sub-regional unit of Tampere (grew by around 150 from one year back) and 639 in the sub-regional unit of Turku (grew by around 150 from one year back).
